Toronto in New York City Day, March 4, 2008
On March 4, 2008 the GTMA in partnership with the Toronto Financial Services Alliance, MEDT, the Canadian Consulate in New York City and many private sector partners organized a one-day event in NYC in the financial services sector that attracted over 130 participants, including 60 that traveled from Toronto to attend. The event featured presentations by the Hon. Dwight Duncan, Finance Minister of Ontario; the Hon. Frank McKenna, Deputy Chairman, TD Bank Financial Group; the Hon. Dan Sullivan, Consul General of Canada in NYC as well as testimonials by senior executives from Merrill Lynch (NYC) and UBS Global Asset Management (Americas) who have already established operations in Toronto.
The program was MC’d by Janet Ecker, President of the TFSA and closing remarks were given by GTMA’s President & COO, John G. Jung, which was taped for later presentation. Workshops followed the main luncheon. A reception at the Consul General residence in NYC was also held honouring the presence of this large delegation including Mississauga Mayor, Hazel McCallion and Brampton Mayor, Susan Fennell who supported the delegation by attending the event in New York City.
This unprecedented event was the first time such a partnership has been assembled together in NYC to promote the Toronto area’s financial services sector and it exceeded all expectations with respect to awareness building, relationship development and lead generation. A special thanks to the Canadian Consulate in NYC for their support, to Anne Kayman and her team at New York Grant Company for helping to organize the event, to the folks at MEDT for their support and to TFSA for their contribution to the program. |

MIPIM 2008, Cannes France, March 10-14, 2008
MIPIM (Marche International des Professionnels de' Immobilier) held in Cannes, France from March 10-14, 2008 is the world's largest property and development show (www.mipim.com), attracting over 29,000 participants and senior decision makers from around the world. A "Team Toronto" delegation representing Canada, Ontario, Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area as well as private sector representatives and Waterfront Toronto actively participated. This initiative was coordinated by the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, in association with our coordination support team F.D. Tamesis in the UK and assistance by staff at the City of Toronto.
This initiative provided an opportunity to raise the awareness of the Toronto area as a place in which to invest and to target potential leads and prospects. Key projects were identified, but in addition to the promotion of real estate and infrastructure in the GTA, key industry sectors were also addressed and actively promoted as well as our quality of life, tourism and the opportunities to locate their businesses in tile Toronto region as a gateway to North America and NAFTA.
The initiative was supported by all levels of government and the private sector. The purpose of Team Toronto's participation was to showcase the city and region's opportunities including the Province's award-winning growth strategy for the Golden Horseshoe region as well as specific projects like the $1 Billion opportunity to develop tile East Bayfront area of the Toronto Waterfront through a booth with targeted messages in an extra-special video display, as well as through collateral materials, on-site meetings, presentations and related networking and strategically targeted pre-qualified meetings. GTMA Board Member Carl Knipfel of the City of Toronto and his staff did an excellent job with tile booth and video promoting the city and region. |

International Game Developers Conference, San Francisco, February 19-22, 2008
The Game Developers Conference (GDC) was held in San Francisco from February 19-22 and is the official trade event "by developers for developers" of computer, console, mobile, arcade, online games, and location based entertainment. The GDC attracts over 12,500 attendees and is the main global forum for those involved in the development of interactive games to exchange ideas, network, and shape the future of the industry.
The GTMA participated in this forum as a member of the Ontario Technology Corridor (OTC), a partnership involving the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (Toronto Region), Canada’s Technology Corridor (Waterloo Region), OCRI (Ottawa Region) and Ontario Ministry of Economic Development & Trade (MEDT).
This year the OTC partnered with the federal government, Interactive Ontario and the Ontario Media Development Corporation and participated in the Canada Pavilion at the Expo as well as the “Hockey Night in Canada” networking event. In addition, the OTC Team conducted pre-qualified meetings with companies and worked the booth meeting a number of firms interested in expanding into the North American market and willing to consider the Corridor as a location for their investment.
The GTMA would like to thank all of the partners involved in this event who did such a great job in organizing the booth and setting up the pre-qualified meetings, including MEDT, OMDC, the Canadian Consulate in San Francisco and Canada’s Technology Corridor. |
