Mr. Goldbloom holds a degree in Modern European History and Literature from Harvard University. He spent a year at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris and then returned to Montreal where he earned law degrees at McGill University in both civil and common law. He was admitted to the Quebec bar in 1980, following which he worked as a labour lawyer for eleven years at Fasken Martineau (formerly Martineau Walker).
Mr. Goldbloom was appointed Publisher of The Toronto Star in March 2004.
He joined the Toronto Star in July, 2003, as Deputy Publisher and Senior Vice-President of Strategy and Human Resources.
Mr. Goldbloom was President and Publisher of The Gazette in Montreal for seven years between 1994 and 2001.
Between his roles at The Gazette and the Toronto Star, Mr. Goldbloom was a visiting scholar at the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada where, in addition to guest lecturing, he conducted a study on the feasibility of establishing a centre on media and public policy at McGill. He also organized and co-chaired a major national conference on the control of Canada’s media.
Before starting his career in newspapers, Mr. Goldbloom was President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA de Montréal, the city’s oldest and largest community organization. Mr. Goldbloom has a distinguished record of community service as a volunteer and activist in several sectors including advancing constitutional rights, education and social services.
Mr. Goldbloom is a director of The Canadian Press, the Canadian Newspaper Association , the American Press Institute and workopolis.com.
He lives in Toronto with his wife Fiona Macleod. Mr. Goldbloom is an avid cyclist in the summer and hockey player in the winter.
