Public Sector Partner of the Year Winner

SAE 2003 COORDINATING COMMITTEE

The SAE Committee is comprised of a group of municipal economic development officials, who promote the GTA as “North America’s Automotive Powerhouse” at the annual Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit.

At SAE 2003, the Committee tried a new approach to generating business leads, which involved a pre-qualified meeting program with companies that had expressed an interest in locating in the GTA.

The results were resoundingly positive with one company deciding to open a facility in the region.

International Leadership Award Winner

ELYSE ALLAN, PRESIDENT & CEO - THE TORONTO BOARD OF TRADE

Since the outbreak of the SARS crisis last year, Elyse Allan and the Toronto Board of Trade have played a critical role in rebuilding Toronto’s reputation in the minds of tourists, corporate travelers and investors.

Last spring, Allan joined leaders from industry, labour and government to form the Toronto Tourism Industry Community Coalition. Through this group she founded and chaired the Business Travel Recovery Task Force. Allan’s strong leadership was further demonstrated by her effectiveness as a media spokesperson for the Board and the region.

 

ED & DAVID MIRVISH - MIRVISH PRODUCTIONS

Ed and David Mirvish, a dynamic father-and-son duo, are well known for their theatrical productions. These shows have generated millions of dollars in tourism revenues and ensured jobs for thousands of people. After the SARS outbreak, Mirvish Productions was the first to come forward. They partnered with hotels, attractions, restaurants, the City and the Province to entice tourists back to the city. Mirvish Productions was unrelenting in its efforts to counter the real and potential effects of SARS on our tourism economy.

MIKE MYERS, ACTOR

On May 12, 2003, actor-comedian, Mike Myers, appeared on NBC’s “Tonight Show” to go to
bat for his beleaguered hometown. At a time when other Hollywood stars refused to come to Toronto due to the outbreak of SARS, Mike Myers took the leadership to tell audiences that Toronto was completely safe. Wearing a Maple Leafs jersey and later an “I Love Toronto”

T-shirt, Myers urged Americans to visit the city and ignore the SARS hysteria. Media outlets reported his message across North America and around the world.

International Marketing Award Winners

MOLSON CANADA

Molson Canada stepped to the forefront at a time of need by sponsoring and promoting a major concert to raise positive awareness for Toronto in the wake of SARS.

In just six short weeks the Molson team worked with the three levels of government to stage “Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto” on July 30th.

More than 495-thousand concert goers attended the event, which injected millions of dollars into the local economy.

The concert kick-started the recovery from SARS and generated positive awareness for Toronto around the globe.

CITY OF MISSISSAUGA - BIOTECHNOLOGY MARKETING CAMPAIGN

The City of Mississauga Economic Development Office developed a campaign to launch their Biotechnology study as well as market Mississauga to the Bio industry locally and internationally.

The creative concept for the marketing materials was developed in-house and the marketing plan employed a variety of tactics including print advertising, web pages, trade show promotion, radio and television coverage

FILM ONTARIO/ONTARIO MEDIA DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION(OMDC)/COMMERICAL PRODUCTION ASSOCIATION OF TORONTO(CPAT)

In the wake of the SARS outbreak, the stakeholders in the film and television sector came together in an unprecedented way to stabilize and restart production spending. The Commercial Production Association of Toronto and a new group of stakeholders formed under the banner of Film Ontario formed a unique partnership with the City of Toronto and the Ontario Media Development Corporation. This group shared the cost of a series of marketing activities aimed at recapturing and re-positioning Toronto as a destination for film and TV production.

SIEMENS IN CANADA

Siemens Business Services is a leading provider of electronic business solutions and IT services.

The company began building a technical support centre for a multinational, name brand computer manufacturer in Mississauga early last year.

Since going live in April 2003, the Siemens technical support centre has offered 24/7 services in English, French, Spanish and Dutch and created 220 new IT-related jobs.

DAIMLERCHRYSLER CANADA

Chrysler Group has invested 1.4 billion dollars to prepare the Brampton Assembly Plant for the Chrysler 300 Series and Dodge Magnum. This family of all-new, rear-wheel drive sedans is scheduled to begin production this year.

Approximately 80% of the three million square foot facility was overhauled and transformed into a flexible manufacturing facility capable of building and piloting multiple models simultaneously.

In today’s cost-competitive automotive industry, the Brampton transformation has saved the company millions of dollars.

MAYOR HAZEL MCCALLION - CITY OF MISSISSAUGA

Well-known locally as the dynamic Mayor of Mississauga, Hazel McCallion is also recognized beyond our borders as an international ambassador for the Greater Toronto Area. During her 25 years as the City’s Mayor, she has used her expertise and influence to effect change at home and abroad. Her formidable drive and “running like a business” philosophy, has been instrumental in attracting companies and economic investment to her city. It was Mayor McCallion’s leadership and vision that brought the municipalities in the GTA together, which ultimately led to the creation of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance.
